Hyderabad: The Union home ministry on Tuesday communicated to the Telangana government the increase of three more MLC seats from the local bodeis quota, as per the provisions of the AP Re-organisation Act. This paved the way for elections to 12 pending seats.
The Election Commission is likely to announce elections to the MLC seats from local bodies in October, according to informed sources. The bifurcation Act had created the Telangana Council with 40 seats, taking into account the 120-MLA strength of the Assembly. As per the statute, no Council should be constituted with a strength not below 40 seats and should not be above one-third of the Assembly strength.
At the time of bifurcation there were only 37 seats in the TS Council. This has forced the Centre to create three more MLC seats from the local body constituencies. Accordingly one seat each has been added to Mahbubnagar, Ranga Reddy and Karimnagar districts which account for the maximum number of voters who include ZPTCs and municipal councillors.
Due to this, the quota from the local body constituencies has risen from 11 to 14. Since MLCs have already been elected from GHMC area, elections will now have to be held to the 12 remaining seats, official sources added.
