Rope in actors for helmet rule: Madras High Court
Chennai: The Madras high court has suggested to the government to rope in politicians and Kollywood actors to create awareness on the benefits of helmet-wearing by two-wheeler riders.
When the matter challenging the mandatory helmet rule came up for hearing before Justice N. Kirubakaran, the special government pleader, Venugopal, filed an affidavit stating that in July 498 persons died in road accidents. Of them, 444 were not wearing helmets. Following the court order, the government made it compulsory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmet from July 1.
The judge directed the Union government to ensure that two-wheeler manufacturers provide helmets confirming to BIS standards to vehicle buyers. He also directed the Centre to issue suitable directions to two-wheeler manufacturers to provide helmet locks in the vehicle as a component and not as an accessory. He posted the matter for further hearing on October 30 .
