Malaysia permits to celebrate 200 year of Tamil education

Most significant event would be planting 200 trees on February 21 next year

Tiruchy: The Malaysian Government accorded permission to celebrate 200 years of Tamil education which commenced there in 1816. A national committee consisting of Tamil scholars, members of Tamil organisations and other like-minded associations, headed by Malaysian Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan was formed.

Mannar Mannan Maruthai, president of the Malaysian Tamil Writers Association and a member of the committee told Deccan Chronicle here on Tuesday, that the most significant event would be planting 200 trees on February 21 next year, World Mother Tongue Day, across Malaysia.

Mr. Maruthai who is also a lecturer at the Tamil Malay University, Malaysia, said that there are 524 Tamils schools in Malaysia and the 200 year celebrations are taking place in all these schools. They are organsing symposiums, seminars, competitions on Tamil, and special lectures in which renowned Tamil scholars across the world will speak about Tamil and its ancient history.
