Bengaluru: Man held for siphoning off gold from jeweller

BENGALURU: A 34-year-old man was arrested for siphoning off gold in minute quantities from his place of work, a jewellery manufacturing facility at Whitefield.

The accused, Subeer Mondal, is a native of West Bengal and a resident of K.R. Puram. Subeer used to conceal small quantities of gold in his trouser hook on a regular basis and used to evade the three security checks including door-frame metal detectors over two years, said the police.

Subeer had been working at the jewellery manufacturing facility since 2012. He used to collect the wastage gold powder and dust, to melt them as thin sticks and conceal it in his pant hook, the police said. But luck ran out for him when he approached a few gold shops in Nagarathpet to sell his bracelet. One of the shop-keepers tipped off the police observing Subeer’s activities that were suspicious. The police questioned took Subeer after which he reportedly confessed to his crime.

The Halsuru Gate police registered a case and raided Subeer’s house where they recovered gold weighing 480 gm including his 70 gm bracelet, two mobile phones worth Rs 90,000 and a car from him. Subeer had also recently bought an i20 Hyundai car and the police are also investigating how he managed get the money to buy it.
