Plant scientist named University of Hyderabad vice chancellor
He has, so far, guided more than 17 PhD students
Hyderabad: Prof Appa Rao Podile of the Department of Plant Sciences has been appointed the new vice chancellor of University of Hyderabad on Monday.
A gold medalist in MSc, he has a PhD from Sardar Patel University and is a post-doctoral fellow from the Institute of Botany,Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan.
He has, so far, guided more than 17 PhD students. An enthused Prof Podile told Deccan Chronicle, “I was the youngest among the three short-listed candidates for the coveted position. With the government preferring younger people for various positions, I was indeed hopeful of getting selected.”
On improving the university’s fortunes and infrastructure, Prof Podile said he would be in constant touch with the Union HRD ministry as also the ministry of science and technology, both for funds and guidance. He would aim at improving the university's world ranking.
Speaking on the recent issues plaguing UoH, he said, “I will try to preempt embarrassing situations for the university by having open and regular interactions with students as well as the staff. I know almost every teaching and non-teaching staff there by name. This will be an advantage for me.” On student politics on the campus, he would get in touch with the dean of student welfare. Prof Podile is a native of Guntur.
