Panel to probe illegal sand mining

Illegal sand mining is rampant in the vicinity of Thandava River

Kakinada: A four member committee has been appointed to probe illegal sand mining at Thanda River in Tuni Assembly Constituency in East Godavari.

According to sources, illegal sand mining is rampant in the vicinity of Thandava River, particularly at Kolimeru, Polvaram and other villages.

Bharatiya Kisan Sangh leader G. Ramakrish-nam Raju and others lodged a complaint with the district officials two weeks back on the illegal sand mining.

The officials instructed the Zilla Parishad of-ficials to conduct an inquiry on the issue.

The farmers alleged that a syndicate is mining the sand illegally in the river and also destroying agriculture fields in the vicinity of river, violating the Water, Lands and Trees Act (WALTA).

Though several representations were submitted to the officials, none of them curbed the activity.
