LDF gears up to face local polls
The first meeting of experts has identified corruption-free administration as an important poll plank

KOCHI: Even as it goes ahead with the agitation to press for a judicial inquiry into the Fort Kochi boat tragedy, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has started preparations for the imminent local body elections in right earnest and has identified priority areas.
In a different strategy, LDF has decided to convene meetings of experts and collect their views and then go to the people with these to know their opinions. Then a people’s assembly will discuss the topics before finalising the manifesto.
The first meeting of experts has identified corruption-free administration as an important poll plank.
Introducing mobile apps for corporation services, subsidised entrance coaching, decentralising agricultural activities, farm tourism, spreading of organic farming, electronic industrial park, continuing training in IT sector, e-waste disposal system, green buildings, WiFI in key public spots, conservation of water bodies and Ambalamedu drinking water project are some of the identified areas.
The LDF has also identified City Gas Project, building memorials for G Sankarakurup and P. J. Antony, ID card for migrant labourers, Pakal Veedu or meeting places for the elderly in every ward, geriatric policy, dialysis centres at every hospital, disabled-friendly city, construction of city halls, doctors and medicines for government hospitals, doctor@home project, She Bus, houses for all poor, rehabilitation of the wayside vendors, toilets for women, breastfeeding centres, She Police Station, more powers to resident associations, special package for West Kochi, coordination of various transport segments, multilevel parking system, facility for cycling on roads and modern waste treatment plant as the areas of importance.
These areas have been suggested by experts including Dr M. P. Sukumaran Nair, secretary to the former chief minister, Prof K. Aravindakshan and Prof Ramakanthan.
