KNOS to bring out organ transplant survival registry
KOCHI: The Kerala Network of Organ Sharing (KNOS) or Mrithasanjeevani, which is the nodal state government agency facilitating organ transplantation in the state, will bring out an outcome registry for the first time in the country.
The registry will have details about the latest condition of each patient who underwent transplantation in the state and will be accessible to the public to know about the success rate of organ transplantation.
“In western countries, outcome registry is compulsory which makes the circle of organ retrieval, donation and transplantation and survival complete. We also decided to introduce it so that people are aware of the results of organ transplantation,” said Dr Noble Gracious, nodal officer of KNOS.
“For a transplantation, one has to shell out Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. In the West, five- year survival rate in the case of 80 percent cases is a must for a transplant centre to function. The outcome registry is a performance appraisal for these centres. The sector cannot be unbridled. So the transplant centres should be allowed after analysing their outcomes,” he said.
It is learnt that there are centres in the country that claim 100 percent results without showing any actual evidence which is dangerous and misleading for the patients and relatives.
The new move is to bring in accountability in health care delivery. The online transplant registry of KNOS already maintains records of patients on waiting list for kidney, liver, heart and pancreas transplants in the state.
As per KNOS, the current number of donors from Kerala stands at 149 and the total number of solid organs donated is 397.
Of this, the number of kidneys is 262, liver 108, heart 19, pancreas 2, small intestine 2 and hand 4. A total of 346 corneas and 60 heart valves too have been given.
