Chennai autos to issue receipts, have GPS
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has finally decided to use the latest gadget to curb the menace of fleecing by autorickshaw drivers. The transport department has informed the Madras high court that a 13-member committee, comprising officials from various departments, is to prepare the technical specifications and standards to fit electronic digital fare meters with printer and GPS in the three-wheelers in Chennai.
The department made the submission before the first Bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T. S. Sivagnanam, when a PIL filed by the general secretary J.Seshasayanam of Madras metro auto drivers’ association came up for hearing.
The petitioner alleged that even after 10 months of issue of a G.O., the authorities had not taken steps to procure digital fare meters with printers, and GPS instruments. Government Pleader S.T.S. Moorthy submitted that purchase of these meters with printer facilities had been entrusted to ELCOT and regarding this the G.O. was also passed on 26.6.2014.
The tender will be finalised in two months. In six months, order will be issued to the successful bidder to implement the project. Noting this, the bench hoped that the authorities would stick to the time schedule.
