Row hots up over ESI college takeover

The political parties that organised protests demanding takeover extend silent support to the trade unions
KOLLAM: The trade unions approaching the court against the government takeover of the ESI Medical College, Parippally, while their parent parties were demanding its immediate takeover has kicked up a controversy.
Representatives of major trade unions including the CITU, AITUC, a faction of INTUC, and BMS, have recently approached the court to stay the procedures while the process is nearing completion.
The political parties are apparently battling for the credit in the name of medical college as the elections are round the corner.
“If the state government takes over, the district will lose another at Kollam which is under way. The money has to be diverted and the latter proposal will be in a shambles. The decision by the Central government to abandon it was not right,” said E. Kasim of CITU.
Meanwhile, the political parties that organised protests demanding takeover extend silent support to the trade unions.
“The trade unions have not raised the takeover demand earlier. We, the people’s representatives, did it on behalf of the public,” CPI legislator G. S. Jayalal told DC.
N.K. Premachandran MP said it was “an act to sabotage the project”.
“As per the agreement, the employees will be given free treatment and 35% reservation for their children in MBBS admissions after its takeover. The BJP government had discontinued the former government’s policy of setting up ESI medical colleges,” he said. The state cabinet decided to take it over in March.
