Boy has close shave as police van runs amok in Mylapore

A 10-year-old boy identified as Ajith had a close shave in the mishap when the van hit his cycle
Chennai: Commotion ensued in Mylapore after a police van ran amok at the congested South Mada Street on Sunday hitting a series of vehicles. Enraged locals flagged the van before the constable could escape and handed him over to the local police.
A 10-year-old boy identified as Ajith had a close shave in the mishap when the van hit his cycle. “The cycle got completely mangled. Luckily, the boy jumped off it and escaped with bruises,” S. Rajendran, an ATM security guard who witnessed the accident told DC.
Around 12.30 pm, the van from East Mada street made a sharp turn onto South Mada street when the accident happened. The van was being driven by police constable, Masilamani (25) of Ulundurpet, police said. He was carrying food for the cops on bandobust duty for the Vinayakar chaturthi processions.
After brushing the cycle, the van hit an auto rickshaw coming towards it and then hit a car and two-wheeler parked nearby, according to eyewitnesses.
The auto driver lost control and rammed onto a roadside vegetable stall.
A vendor at Kalathi newspaper mart who witnessed the incident said that the driver was driving rashly in spite of it being a sharp turn. Condemning his reckless driving, locals gathered and pulled the constable out of the vehicle.
“The cops on security detail for the Ganesha immersion immediately came to his rescue. Otherwise, the driver would have been subjected to mob justice,” Mr Rajendran said.
He was taken to the Mylapore police who handed him over to the Adyar traffic investigation cops. “He was let off as there was no complaint from any of them,” said a police officer.
Further, Masilamani reportedly told investigators that he swerved the vehicle to avoid hitting the boy which led to the multiple collision.
