Woman set ablaze in Dabeerpura

Locals douse fire, take her to hospital, cops doubt story

Hyderabad: On Saturday night the public saved a 35-year-old woman who was seen in flames, behind the Old ACP office in Dabeerpura.

Ms Naeema Sultana, who sustained 25 per cent burns, later told the police that seven people, including her cousins, had attacked her.

Police, however, is doubting her allegations as she was earlier involved in 10 offences and had filed false cases against many people.

Police officials are verifying whether she is trying to frame her adversaries in a criminal case.

Among the seven whom Ms Naeema accused of attacking her, are her cousins Mr Md. Hameed, a sub inspector who is now on pilgrimage to Mecca, and Mr Md. Majid, a trainee sub inspector, and Mr Masood, a lawyer.

Three others are women staffers in local courts. Witnesses said that the incident took place in a residential area after 12.30 at night.

“She was shouting and running towards the road while her clothes were on fire. Two people extinguished the flames and alerted the police. She was then taken to the police station,” said a resident from the area.

She had burns on her hands, thighs and abdomen and it seemed highly unlikely someone else had set her afire, the police said after examining the case.

“The woman, who lives in a ladies hostel in Madhapur, said that she came to the area to withdraw money from an ATM. However, she did not say why she remained in the area. Most of the other information she gave us are contradictory,” said Mr M. Mattaiah, the inspector of Dabeerpura police station. However, the police has booked a case for attempt to murder and has started investigating.

Ms Naeema had a fight with some female court employees whom she had earlier attacked, leading to a police case. She also had a grudge against her cousins, police said.
