Simran Mundi on her second innings in films, and wanting to break into Kollywood
Back in 2008, when she was crowned Miss India Universe, the ravishing Simran Kaur Mundi knew it was going to be a challenge to break into films despite her fashion background — but she certainly couldn’t have anticipated that seven years on, she’d be preparing for a second innings of sorts.
“I certainly see it that way, and there’s no harm in it. After winning the pageant, I had a lot of movie offers, but wanted to take it slow. Unfortunately, though I’m happy about the choices I made, my earlier flicks didn’t garner me the kind of recognition I wanted. Now I see it as a fresh start to my career, a second debut if you will! I’m acting in Abbas-Mustan’s Kis Kisko Pyar Karu opposite comedian Kapil Sharma who is making his film debut, and I’m really excited,” Simran says.
With a huge ensemble cast, the all-out comedy features Simran in a quintessential glamorous role as a model who plays Kapil’s first wife —isn’t this the type of stereotype she wants to avoid? “True, I’ve struggled for years to avoid being bracketed into the same kind of ‘sexy, pretty face’ character that all models and beauty queens face, despite Miss India giving me suitable exposure and a path into films. It’s another reason I said no to a number of big projects, as I wanted to do meaningful roles. But Abbas-Mustan convinced me that my role in KKPK makes sense, and also is very different from my real-life avatar which seemed like a challenge,”
she explains.
The actress has also been part of a reality show, anchored the Hockey India League, worked in a music video, and also experimented with films in several languages — namely Hindi, Punjabi and Telugu. But Simran remains determined to spread her wings as far as possible —“Deepika’s role in Cocktail, Kangana in Queen, or Priyanka in Fashion — these are the kind of projects I want to work in, irrespective of which medium or language they are in. Since I’ve already acted in Telugu, south Indian films do interest me; I’d love to work with Mahesh Babu, for example. I even met his wife recently and she spoke highly of me. In Tamil, of course to act with a legend like Rajinkanth sir is on every actress’ wish list! Kollywood seems like a very interesting industry.”
Simran, who says she aspires to live up to her ‘Beauty with Brains’ persona from the pageant, is also busy starting a wedding and event planning company, and concludes by saying that everything in her life has been a learning process so far — “I don’t want to restrict myself — as long as I like what I do, and who I associate with, it’s always happy going for me.”
