Ragging: Police chief blames managements

Mr C.V. Anand said the image of the college has become a hindrance in initiating action against students
Hyderabad: Cyberabad police commissioner C.V. Anand has said that private engineering colleges and some other institutions were failing to act in ragging cases fearing that the image of the institution would be affected.
Mr Anand cited the example of a ragging case at Nalsar and said that the varsity authorities had pressurised the police against booking a case of ragging saying that the university’s image would take a beating.
Hyderabad police commissioner M. Mahender Reddy and Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) chairman Prof. T. Papi Reddy also asked institutions to take strong action against those who engage in ragging.
The officials were addressing private college managements as part of a ‘Review on implementation of anti-ragging measures in educational institutions’ here on Saturday.
Mr C.V. Anand said the image of the college has become a hindrance in initiating action against students who engage in ragging. “Universities and colleges are opposing cases saying their image will take a beating. In a ragging case at Nalsar, the authorities opposed stringent action because of this reason. They should take strong action but it is not happening,” Anand said.
Hyderabad police commissioner Mahender Reddy said small incidents should be checked by the college. He also asked ragging victims to complain to the police through the Hawk Eye mobile app. TSCHE chairman Papi Reddy said all institutions would have to depute two teachers at hostels every night.
