Oommen Chandy justifies plantation workers’ wage hike demand
He justified the demand for higher wages by the workers
KOCHI: The prevailing wages in the plantation sector is not enough for meeting the livelihood needs of workers, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said on Saturday. Speaking after inaugurating the 76th annual general meeting of the Association of Planters of Kerala, he justified the demand for higher wages by the workers.
Mr. Chandy, however, assured the planters that the government would not force the industry to implement a pay revision that would threaten their very existence.
“Plantation sector plays crucial role in the overall economy of Kerala and we cannot afford to destroy the industry,” he said. He said the government was trying to find solution that would be agreeable to the workers and the plantation industry.
