Work on additional desal plants begins
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will take up feasibility study for seven combined water supply schemes and two water development projects in the state this fiscal. Making the announcement in the state Assembly on Friday, minister for municipal administration S.P.Velumani said the schemes would be in the districts of Namakkal, Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, Tirunelveli, Erode, Tirupur, Villupuram, Dindigul and Theni.
The minister said the state government had taken effective steps to set up a 400 MLD desalination plant at Perur at a cost of about Rs 4,070 crore and an additional desalination plant with a capacity of 150 MLD at Nemmeli at a cost of Rs 1,371 crore.
The Union urban development ministry has sent the Perur project proposal for Japan International Cooperation Agency’s approval. The state government hopes that JICA would soon finalise the financial assistance and work would start soon.
To ensure daily supply of drinking water in 12,524 panchayats, the municipal administration and water supply department has been monitoring distribution of water through its website and addressing complaints. “Ms Jayalalithaa announced eight combined water schemes for the districts of Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Dindigul and Salem at a cost of Rs 2,408 crore and works are progressing rapidly,” he said.
