Madras High Court tells politician to clean students’ hostel
Chennai: Inmates of Adi-dravidar students hostel on Ratnasabapathy Street at Tondiarpet here will receive a politician wielding a broom and a bucket. Following a Madras High court order, he will perform the social work in the hostel. He will do the work for three hours every day for five days in a week.
The court will watch his conduct for three months. He should produce a certificate from the hostel in-charge that he had done the social work. The First bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam passed the order in a contempt petition filed against two advocates and the politician for threatening officials, when they went to remove encroachments at Sowcarpet. The officials were prevented from carrying out the work.
When the matter came up recently, the court directed them to appear. The three, Thurvasan and T. R. Srinivasalu of Elephant Gate and Kannadasan of Okkiyam, Thuraipakkam appeared and tendered unconditional apology for causing trouble to the officials.
Two among the contemnors, advocates who were enrolled in the last two years, said they were misguided by a local person. Now they were ashamed of their acts. The bench said
“We have cautioned them that having been enrolled in the last two years, they are required to clear the exam of the Bar Council within two years from enrolment in order to retain eligibility to practice as an advocate”. The bench advised them to take lessons on ethics of the profession for the next three months from their senior G. Krishnamurthy, also their counsel. The Bench posted the matter for December 18 for further hearing.
