Srinagar: Police in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday arrested Sayeda Aasiya Andrabi, chief of all-women Dukhtaran-e-Millat (daughters of the faith), on charges of hoisting Pakistan flag on that country’s Independence Day and waging war against the country.
Ms Andrabi who is reportedly unwell was along with another Dukhtaran activist, Fahmeeda, from her residence in Srinagar’s 90-Feet Road, Soura area and taken to women’s police station in the city’s Rambagh area. Police said a case had been registered against her under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act after she hoisted the Pakistan flag while celebrating the neighbouring country’s Independence Day on August 14.
She had in her telephonic address to a rally organised in Lahore on that day greeted the people of Pakistan on their national day. The rally was attended by Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, who is one of India’s most wanted men for his role in the Mumbai terror attacks. The separatists have strongly reacted to her arrest and demanded her immediate unconditional release.
