Funding throws off abattoir project
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The last-ditch effort by the LDF-led ruling front in the corporation to reopen Kunnukuzhy slaughterhouse has been derailed.
Maharashtra-based Raiba Industries submitted the detailed project report to set up first ever eco-friendly zero waste generating modern abattoir in April.
However, the technical committee constituted by the civic body failed to finalise the Memora-ndum of Understanding with the company.
The technical committee met here the other day to finalise the agreement with the Raiba Industries failed as the company refused to execute the project without ensuring Central funds.
The civic body is expecting Rs 15 crores from the Centre for the Rs 23-crore modern abattoir.
A top official of the civic body said that the MoU could not be signed once the election dates were announced and the code of conduct came into force. As per sources, the local polls would be announced within two weeks.
“We are planning to hold discussions with Suchitwa Mission to sanction Central funds for the project. Without allowing the funds, the company won’t sign the MoU,” said the official.
The company had agreed to set up the abattoir within eight months. It has also proposed a restaurant attached to the abattoir.
“Slaughtering will be fully mechanised and there will not be any foul smell. Facilities will be there to convert slaughter waste into other byproducts. The abattoir would be major revenue generating asset for the corporation,” said the official.
