10 per cent NGOs file balance sheets: CBI

CBI said 26 states had filed response giving details of the NGOs

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation which has earlier urged the Supreme Court to regulate flow of funds to NGOs, on Friday informed the court that out of thirty lakh registered NGOs in the country only 3.80 lakhs are filing balance sheets every year.

The CBI wanted the court to regulate the NGOs by stipulating a condition that they would not be eligible to receive funds if they did not file balance sheets for three years indicating the purpose for which the amounts were spent.

Recently, the home ministry had taken action against many NGOs for receiving foreign funds without complying with the provisions of Foreign Contributions Regulation Act.

A Bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and justice Amitav Roy, before whom the petition filed by advocate M.L. Sharma came up for hearing took the CBI’s fresh affidavit on record and granted eight weeks time to some of the States to furnish necessary information to the CBI. CBI said 26 states had filed response giving details of the NGOs.
