Hyderabad: A matrimonial racket has been busted and four persons arrested here for cheating innocent girls and their families. Two of the arrested were Nigerians, police said.
Police seized three laptops, Rs 1,38,000 and $350 in cash and Nigerian currency of 9,000 neros, besides 10 mobile phones and three data cards used by the accused. Nine others had helped the Nigerians in cheating girls by allowing the victims deposit or withdraw money through their bank accounts.
Prime accused Ugwunge Lewis Afamefuna, Tony and James registered themselves as grooms on matrimonial websites including Bharat Matrimony.com under fictitious names and posed as high-profile businessmen staying abroad. They targeted the profiles of women who were either singles or widows. They started with casual chats before gradually enticing them with promises of marrying them.
The arrested were Igbute Kingsley Ucheka, Igbute Jude Nwabulor, Santosh Kumar and Dhirendra Kumar. The absconding men are James, Praveen Singh, Mahesh Kumar Tiwari, Nikhil Sharma, Samir Gupta, Sunil Kumar, Sandeep Mishra, Lalitha and Ashok Singh.
