From fashion to photography
Supermodel turned photographer Sheetal Mallar talks about shifting from modelling to a bright new career in photography
From supermodel to photographer — that’s Sheetal Mallar for you. We still remember the days when the tall, dusky model blazed the ramp at shows like Lakmé Fashion Week, walking for well-known designers and brands. Of course people talk, and she will forever be mentioned in pieces that start with ‘faces we miss on the ramp’ — but to Sheetal, that was another life and she is now a full-time photographer.
However, we got to see her catwalk for fashion designer Sidney Sladen’s Breakaway show, stunning everyone present. “I rarely walk the ramp these days,” Sheetal tells us, “But I do it for friends here and there. Sidney and I go back a long away, and I’m very fond of him.” But does she miss it; the glamour and hectic schedules? “No, I don’t miss the job. I like to think that I’ve had a long and very fulfilling career as a model for so long.”
For some people, her sharp career turn took some time getting used to. “Some people took to my decision easily, some didn’t. When they have seen you doing something for long, they are used to it, and they don’t immediately forget that. When they ask me if I’m ever going to come back to the ramp, I tell them that I feel there’s a time for everything — things have a lifespan,” she says, adding, “Photography has been a great journey so far and it’s something I’m very passionate about. It’s like my second journey, you know. I really enjoy shooting portraits of people in their natural environment.”
