‘Wasn’t Jackie uncle also called wooden?’

Sooraj reacts to the criticism that came his way after the release of Hero
Hero didn’t open to the kindest reviews last Friday and Sooraj Pancholi, in particular, may have been in the line of fire for some hard comments. Finally reacting to the critics, Sooraj said, “I wasn’t around in 1983 when Subhash sir’s Hero was released, but didn’t critics also call Jackie (Shroff) uncle ‘wooden’ back then? In fact, from what I know, the overall reviews weren’t too flattering either. But I guess everyone in this country worships the past. Bimal Roy’s Devdas became more of a classic after Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas arrived. I guess we’ll have to wait for another version of Hero, to be treated kindly.”
Valiantly defending his performance Sooraj adds, “My character is inhibited and highly complex. How do we know what kind of a past he had? The chap I played is introverted. I couldn’t have played him as loud and demonstrative.” Sooraj jumps to his director’s defence too. “Nikhil sir (Advani) had set out to make a film that was a 1980s blockbuster, as a launch vehicle for Athiya and me. It was a job assigned to him and according to me, he did his job very well. I couldn’t have hoped for a better launch.”
