Traffic woes to be a thing of past

Implementation of Integrated Traffic Management System may put an end to the traffic problems
Vijayawada: The implementation of Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), approved by CM N. Chandrababu Naidu recently, may put an end to the traffic problems haunting the citizens since more than a decade in Vijayawada.
Commissioner of police D. Gautam Sawang had proposed ITMS for the city in a meeting with the CM and CRDA officials. ITMS would initially cover 56 junctions in city.
Cities like Hyderabad, Chennai and Hong Kong and other global cities have been using ITMS and found it feasible to reduce traffic congestions as well as save duration of travel.
The system would be based on technology rather than manforce and includes intelligent traffic management. Most of the traffic signals installed in city junctions are out of order and traffic has been controlled manually since long.
Though the city police have been making several proposals with viable traffic control systems like Intelligent Traffic Control system, Modern Traffic Signals with Intelligent Video Surveillance System, lack of support from state government and contractors failed to make it a reality.
River interlinking project stalls traffic on NH:
The formal interlinking of Krishna and Godavari Rivers at Ferry village of Ibrahimpatnam left thousands of vehicles stranded for hours on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad National Highway in Krishna district on Wednesday.
Though the Vijayawada police officials took utmost care to ensure smooth traffic flow by diverting heavy vehicles at the district borders itself, poor management at the ground level forced commuters to stay on roads for hours.
Movement of vehicles was blocked starting from highway near Ferry village and Tummapalame village, a 3-km stretch. Traffic on all roads leading to Ibrahimpatnam was also blocked.
DCP (Admin) G.V.G. Ashok Kumar and other higher officials were at the ground and controlled traffic at Ibrahimpatnam. From early hours of Wednesday vehicular traffic was diverted from points at district borders including Hanuman Junction, Chillakallu.
