Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday adopted a resolution demanding an international probe into alleged war crimes in north Sri Lanka. Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, who mooted the resolution, also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking that the Centre move a 'strong resolution' along with the United States in the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) demanding an international probe into the war crimes and alleged genocide of Tamils committed by Sri Lanka.
The Assembly resolution, which was unanimously adopted by the house, also pointed out that the island nation had violated human rights and Geneva Convention guidelines.
“TN Assembly also requested the Government of India that if America takes a supportive stand for Sri Lanka at the UNHRC, then India must take a diplomatic route to thwart the US move, so that justice is rendered to the ethnic Tamils of Eelam,” the resolution read.
Jayalalithaa also recalled earlier resolutions passed in the Assembly seeking to stop treating SL as a ‘friendly nation’ in 2013 and said it was her long standing demand to the Centre to impose economic sanctions against Lanka.
