Naga group that killed 18 jawans banned for 5 years
New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday imposed a ban on rebel Naga outfit NSCN(K), run by S.S. Khaplang, for five years, declaring it an unlawful organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The decision was taken at a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This move comes three months after the outfit carried out the biggest attack on the Indian Army, killing 18 soldiers in Manipur’s Chandel district on June 4. A notification will soon be issued by the Union home ministry.
Communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the NSCN(K) has been declared an unlawful outfit considering the continued hostility and violence on its part against the Indian security personnel, from their bases in Burma.
“The NSCN(K) responsible for explosions, ambushes and bombings has been declared as an unlawful organisation for a period of five years,” Mr Prasad said.
NSCN(K) has presently a strength of around 1,000 cadres.
