MNR Medical College detains 27 Naga students

The students’ fees are reimbursed by the Centre
Hyderabad: The Telangana government will serve notices on the MNR Medical College and Hospital at Sangareddy in Medak district for allegedly not letting Naga students leave for their home state.
The students, admitted under management quota, are said to be unhappy due to lack of basic infrastructure and teaching staff and want to leave. But their certificates are being held back by the college, which is demanding payment of the entire course fees.
About 27 students from Nagaland had been studying physiotherapy at the Sanjeevani College of Physiotherapy run by MNR Medical College and Hospital since last year. “There is no infrastructure or faculty. The students are totally dissatisfied with the college and want to return to Nagaland, but the college is not allowing it,” said Mr Tongpang Ozukum, chief advisor of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF).
The students’ fees are reimbursed by the Centre. MNR College is insisting that the students pay their four years’ fee and are withholding their certificates. “It is against UGC rules. The students are not even allowed to leave the campus. The college thinks that they will flee if allowed out of the campus,” said NSF vice president Shikavi Achumi.
TSCHE chairman Prof. T. Papi Reddy said notices would be issued to the college. The issue has also been brought to the notice of the NTRUHS. Meanwhile, MNR Medical College, has sought time till the end of this month to improve facilities.
