CM warns pvt med colleges flouting norm
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday hit out at the private medical college managements for violating the agreement on the 50 per cent admissions.
At the cabinet briefing, Mr Chandy said the managements had reached an understanding with the government on the 50 per cent government quota norm, but breached the agreement, he said.
“We cannot agree with the stand of college managements. Many students who had secured high ranks could not get admission but at the same time those who had low ranks managed to get in. This is unacceptable. We have decided to initiate legal action against the managements. Preliminary discussions were held on Wednesday,” he said.
Mr Chandy said the government had convened a high- level meeting on Thursday to discuss the legal steps to be taken against the managements. When asked whether college managements had been invited for the meeting, he replied in the negative.
On the colleges which had completed 100 per cent admissions, he said, “they may be having some favourable aspects legally and constitutionally. But here the issue is that they had given an assurance to the government which they breached.”
On the decision to withdraw assistance like post- mortem facility and clinical training in government hospitals to medical colleges which had not entered into an agreement, he said, “the matter will be discussed and legal steps will be initiated against such institutions.”
When asked whether a decision would be taken on Thursday since only 15 days were left for the admission process to complete, he said the government was looking into all aspects. Meanwhile, experts said that the government move to initiate legal action was unlikely to get any favourable response as these colleges were not receiving any government aid.
