Clerical error triggered newborn faux pas?
Chennai: Two weeks after the alleged swapping of a newborn child at the Chengalpet government hospital in Kancheepuram district, grandmother of the child in question confessed that her daughter-in-law had delivered a baby girl and not a boy as recorded in the hospital ledger. Parents (Bhanumathi – Anandan) of the newborn baby had being crying foul that they were forced to take home a girl despite the record showing the woman had delivered a boy.
“The baby is now with Bhanumathi. Her mother-in-law said she believes that Bhanumathi had delivered a baby girl. But we are waiting for DNA report. If we find that the entry in ledger was a clerical error, there will be departmental action against at least eight people including duty doctor who had signed,” the RMO of the hospital said.
The girl baby is now under the care of Bhanumathi, who is breast feeding the child, RMO Isaac Kannan said. Hospital sources said three women, A. Banumathi, K. Dakshayayini and P. Revathy, all from villages in Kancheepuram district, gave birth around midnight two weeks back. And all the three children, born in a gap of 20 minutes, were entered as male children in the ledger. However the next day, Banumathi was handed over a girl baby when the problem started.
Banumathi and her husband Anandan, a daily wage worker of Cheyyur village, had refused to accept the child that day, but later agreed to take home the baby and feed her after his mother told them that she had seen a baby girl at the delivery time.
“But all the three mothers had agreed to compile with the result of the DNA test, which is expected to be in our hand in few days,” RMO said. The doctor indicated that confusion was a result of possible clerical error.
