Chennai: Rs 40 lakh worth gold, silver stolen
Chennai: Nearly 140 sovereigns of gold and 30 kg silver worth over Rs 40 lakh were stolen from a jewellery-cum-pawn shop at Manamathi near Tiruporur in neighbouring Kancheepuram district on Tuesday night. The thieves escaped with Rs 1.25 cash also.
The intruders had made a hole in the wall of the shop to gain entry. According to police, the thieves entered the shop, belonging to Subramani and his son Kumar, by hiding inside a defunct rice mill, located behind the jewellery shop, during day time. After the shop was closed, they made a hole in the wall and escaped with the valuables. The father and son had been running a textile shop and the jewellery-cum-pawn shop next to each other for the last 30 years. It looked like more than one intruder had gained entry into the shop, the police said.
