Syrian man gives Super Mario a refugee makeover

This version of the video game has Mario trying to cross reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea

Most of us have fond memories of playing the popular Super Mario video game in our childhood. Now a young Syrian man is cleverly taking help from the much-loved video game character to make the world aware of the harsh reality of Syrian refugees crossing Europe.

However, instead of Luigi and Princess Peach, this new version has Mario undertaking a risky journey across the Mediterranean Sea via a human trafficking racket. In the game, Mario also encounters Hungarian border guards and is thrown into prison. Refugee Mario even faces many other obstacles at several points throughout the video which lead to his death.

The 29-year-old, who is based in Turkey, goes by the pseudonym Samir Al-Mufti, for what he cites as security reasons. "Five months ago my best friend drowned in the sea while travelling from Ismir (Turkey) to Greece. The engine on the boat exploded. That's when I got the idea for the video,” he told BBC news.
