VS Achuthanandan seeks judicial probe into Kochi boat tragedy
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has urged chief minister Oommen Chandy to order a judicial inquiry into the boat mishap in Fort Kochi.
In a letter to the chief minister, he said the ongoing inquiry by IG level officer was not enough to find out whether the rules, regulations and steps recommended by judicial commissions on Thattekkadu and Thekkady boat tragedies had been implanted in the state.
Moreover, the scope of present inquiry does not cover extensively the issues related to technical, mechanical and safety matters concerning the boats used for transportation purpose.
Achuthanandan said the families of those who died in the mishap should be given adequate compensation for which a package should be announced at the earliest.
The amount announced by the government was not adequate.
He said the government should take immediate steps to ensure the safety and security of thousands of people who bank on water transport facilities daily. All boats being used for transportation should be subjected to strict physical and technical examination, he added.
Under these circumstances, the chief minister should initiate immediate steps to order a judicial probe at the earliest.
