Two maoists shot dead in Telangana's first encounter

There were indications that the Maoists had been camping there for some time

Govindaraopet (Warangal): Two Maoists, one of them an engineering graduate, was killed in the first encounter between Greyhounds and Left-wing extremists since the formation of Telangana state, at Vengalapur early on Tuesday.

The Maoists were identified as Sruthi alias Mahitha, 23, an engineering graduate from Wadde-pally in Hanamkonda, and Vidyasagar Reddy alias Sagar, 32, of Dharmasagar mandal in Warangal district.

They belonged to the Karimnagar-Khammam-Warangal division committee, police said. Maoist secretary Damodar and several others are suspected to have escaped from the encounter spot. A carbine, a .303 rifle, kit bags and detonators were recovered at the site, 10 km inside the forests from Rangapuram village.

There were indications that the Maoists had been camping there for some time.

Greyhounds personnel had launched a combing operation after getting information that some Maoists crossed over from Chhattisgarh and were camping in Warangal.
