Telangana government launches hunt for university chancellors
Telangana government is looking for eminent persons of Telangana origin to appoint as chancellors
Hyderabad: The Telangana government is looking for eminent persons of Telangana origin to appoint as chancellors of universities. Sources said that eminent academicians, noted public personalities or persons holding government office are eligible to be appointed as chancellors. The government will consider only Telangana natives.
The TS government had recently amended the Universities Act empowering itself to appoint chancellors. Sources in the TS education ministry indicated that Prof. J.N. Reddy, holder of the Oscar S. Wyatt Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering at the Texas A&M University, could be nominated as chancellor of JNTU Hyderabad or the Osmania University. Prof. J.N. Reddy is a world renowned scientist in mechanics and hails from Warangal district. He did his engineering at Osmania University.
For other universities too, the government is scouting for academicians and public personalities for the chancellor’s post. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is also said to be keen on turning his attention to the education ministry after returning from China. Sources indicated that several other reforms are on the anvil.
“The chancellor should be an eminent academician or a noted public personality or a member of the government like a minister or the CM,” senior officials in the education ministry said.
“But the first criteria is that the person should belong to Telangana or should be of Telangana origin. We will consider only Telangana persons and if we can't find any, we will look for people from other places,” another senior official said.
