Nurses in Osmania General Hospital go on strike
Over 50 operations in Osmania General Hospital were cancelled on Tuesday
Hyderabad: Over 50 operations in Osmania General Hospital were cancelled on Tuesday after staff nurses went on strike demanding immediate recruitments as they were over burdened and unable to take the load any longer. The strength of OGH nurses has been reduced by 50 per cent as there have been no recruitments in the last three years. There are only 300 nurses while the hospital needs 600. The nurses have been demanding permanent recruitments but instead, contract nurses have been appointed, making it very difficult for them, they said.
A senior doctor in OGH said, “There was not a single operation in the eight operation theatres as the permanent nurses struck work. All the elective operations had to be postponed. Only emergency surgeries were carried out.”
Permanent nurses have been urging hospital superintendent Dr Raghu Ram to take up the matter with the government. Senior nurse Vijaya Shanti said, “We have time and again struck work to bring it to the notice of the government but there have only been assurances. We want more staff to be appointed as the burden is too high and many a times it becomes very difficult to manage.”
