Amma Maaligai, bio plant opened in Chennai
The CM also inaugurated the city’s first multi level parking lot on Greams Road
Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday inaugurated via video-conferencing, the long awaited Ripon Buildings’ annexe, Amma Maaligai. Jayalalithaa inaugurated the office complex constructed at a cost of Rs 39.10 crore, an official statement said. The annexe also has a 500-seater auditorium in its ground floor.
The corporation’s stormwater drain, bus route road, bridges, works, special projects, mechanical, solid waste management, electrical, public, district family welfare, legal cell, revenue, education and election departments will shift into the new complex soon.
The CM also inaugurated the city’s first multi level parking lot on Greams Road. It was constructed at a cost of '43 crore on corporation-owned land. The project was executed on a Design-Build-Operate-Transfer model with Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Limited.
The facility can hold 249 cars and 230 two wheelers in its seven levels and is expected to add around '46 lakh annually to the corporation’s coffers. Jayalalithaa also inaugurated the Rs 48-lakh bio-methanation plant in Pulianthope. The two tonne capacity plant is expected to generate around 160-200 units of electricity on a daily basis, by merely consuming food and other bio-degradable wastes. The plant was built by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.
Speaking to DC, J. Daniel Chellappa, senior scientist (Barc), said the plant is expected to reach full capacity in two months. Three other bio-methanation plants built in conjunction with the Chennai Corporation, he said, were in various stages of commissioning. “Next in line is the three-tonne plant at Otteri. Another three-tonne plant at Velankadu burial ground is almost half complete and we have plans to build a third three-tonne plant at the Athipattu dump yard in Ambattur,” he said.
