Salem: Wife gets lifer for pouring hot oil on husband

The killer-wife has been awarded life sentence by the Salem district court

SALEM: In a spine-chilling murder in Salem, a 31-year-old woman who poured piping hot oil on her sleeping husband and killed him in January 2012.

Three years later, the killer-wife has been awarded life sentence by the Salem district court for the shocking murder.

According to the prosecution, 33-year-old G. Periyasamy, a resident of Mechery in Salem, was married to Chitra and worked as a lorry driver for a private company in Erode. The couple had two daughters and two sons.

Chitra who was engaged in construction work frequently visited Salem and allegedly developed several illegal affairs.

When her husband came to know about it, he warned her not to go to work in Salem. On January 6 night that year, when Periyasamy was sleeping in his house, his wife emptied a pan full of steaming, hot oil on him.

Periayasamy who suffered severe burn injuries was rushed by neighbours to the Salem government hospital. However, he died without responding to treatment.

The police arrested Chitra and filed a charge sheet against her.

The Principal district Sessions Judge, N.Seshasayee awarded life sentence to Chitra for having killed her husband in a brutal manner. Chitra's 14-year-old daughter deposed as a witness against her mother.

The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. If the accused failed to pay the fine, she would have to undergo another two months of imprisonment, the Judge ruled.
