Kochi: The Amicus Curiae appointed to study the private bus operations in the city has suggested before Kerala High Court that the entire existing permits should be reviewed and restructured in a scientific manner.
The court had appointed High Court lawyer Kaleeswaram Raj as Amicus Curiae to assist the court on the issue.
According to Mr Kaleeswaram Raj, while renewing or restructuring the permits, the authorities should also consider the imminent Metro rail service.
The report pointed out that unless there was a regular monitoring of the matter by a committee, which should also properly supervise the city buses and city transport system, a permanent solution cannot be found.
The authorities should consider factors, including vehicle population, nature of roads, the number of travelling public and enhancement in the population of vehicles, including buses.
Stringent action should be taken against the erring drivers and conductors. It is necessary to ensure that permits of the buses and the licence of the drivers/conductors are cancelled either on regular or ad hoc basis depending on the offence,” the report stated.
