Rationalists, seers, students rally for arrest of Kalburgi killers

They launched a mammoth protest and warned the government that the movement will be intensified

Hubballi/Belagavi: Litterateurs, rationalists, pontiffs and students arrived from various parts of the state converged here to vent their anger against the state government with the CID probe team failing to make a breakthrough in the murder case even two weeks after the killing of scholar and researcher Dr M.M. Kalburgi.

They launched a mammoth protest and warned the government that the movement will be intensified if the assailants are not nabbed within a month. Urging the government to implement the anti-superstition bill, they claimed that such a bill is essential to pay tribute to a rationalist leader like Dr Kalburgi and also to send a warning to conservative Lingayats and other Hindu fundamentalists.

Raising questions on why several Lingayat religious institutions have remained silent over the killing of the noted researcher, they suspected that it was a conspiracy hatched by a fascist group within the Lingayat community. “We condemn the government for taking Dr Kalburgi’s murder lightly and demand a special investigating team comprising efficient officials to be set up to nab the accused.

Inordinate delay in the probe has caused much fear among litterateurs and rationalists,” litterateur Giraddi Govindaraj said.
