Medical college doctors blame government
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as health department doctors continue with their hunger strike, the Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) is getting restive over the government’s failure to address their service issues.
It has criticised the government for opening new medical colleges without proper facilities.
"More than a year has passed since the medical college in Idukki came into being. But the development and construction activities were moving at a snail’s pace. Teaching staff, diagnostic laboratories, clinical settings for teaching purpose, department rooms and office space were yet to be put in place. The poor accommodation provided to medical and paramedical staff and students was highly deplorable," said KGMCTA general secretary Dr Kavitha Ravi.
The association said that while issues concerning Manjeri and Idukki medical colleges were yet to be resolved, the government was in a hurry to open new medical colleges at the general hospital in Thiruvananthapuram and Konni.
It said, to prevent further collapse of the state’s medical education sector, the government should adopt the following measures on a war footing: creation of requisite posts for medical and paramedical staff, immediate appointments to newly created posts and existing vacant posts, entry cadre posts to be filled up through regular PSC appointments, accommodation facilities for staff working in difficult terrain like Idukki, clinical and laboratory facilities in new colleges and appointment of hospital superintendents from the medical education service.
