Chennai: Aimed at taking e-governance to every nook and corner of Tamil Nadu, the government on Monday announced the setting up of a state wide optical fibre cable network connecting 12,524 villages. Reaffirming the state policy of ‘Internet for all homes’, an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) along with broadband and other Internet services will soon be launched at an affordable rate connecting households in the state.
Making a suo moto statement in Assembly, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the Tamil Nadu Fibre Net Corporation will be established in the state at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore under the Centre’s broadband project “BharatNet”. The Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV), which has received Internet Service Provider Licence (ISP) from the Union IT ministry, has signed a pact with Indian RailTel for providing high-speed broadband internet services to the people, the CM explained.
Recalling her earlier statement in the Assembly on August 11 on provision of high speed Internet broadband services through TACTV, she said the project would rope in 552 registered cable operators to ensure the service reaches TN gram panchayats in the first phase of the project.
