Indian Medical Association dossier on kickback takers
KOZHIKODE: The IMA has decided to rein in doctors in the state who collect commission from scan centres and laboratories, that comes to even Rs 10,000 per day.
The IMA has taken the details of such doctors who send their patients to scan centres and laboratories often on silly pretexts.
It will report the matter to the Medical Council of India and demand action against these doctors, including suspension of their licences, sources told Deccan Chronicle.
“We have conducted a confidential internal survey among the members of IMA and identified unethical doctors and will give the report to the MCI for follow-up action,” a senior office-bearer of IMA said.
“The doctors who are also the favourites of pharma companies are under the scanner. However, it is difficult to contain the commission and gift exchange between pharma companies and doctors due to wrong government policies in drug production,” the official added.
Sources said there are doctors who collect as much as Rs 10,000 a day towards commission. Even doctors attached to the government medical colleges are accused of such practices.
“The doctor fraternity is losing its face and the people are losing their faith in doctors due to a small percentage of money-minded doctors. So we will recommend strong action against them,” he added.
The IMA is also planning to bring in the accreditation of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) to single-doctor clinics and small hospitals to ensure quality health care.
NABH accreditation will ensure routine medical audit to check the percentage of medical errors. “It is mandatory to conduct a medical audit under NABH accreditation. All big hospitals with NABH accreditation are doing it and we want small and medium hospitals also to have the accreditation,” the doctor added.
