If you can allot land for investors, why not for burial ground, asks MLA
Udhaya Kumar further added that only revenue land earmarked for burial ground could be allotted for that purpose
Chennai: The Opposition managed to steal a few seconds to comment on global investors meet in the Assembly. CPM legislator Dilli Babu kept the treasury benches guessing briefly when the wondered, “If the government could allocate land for global investors, why not for a small burial ground for Muslims?” He was raking the issue of revenue department allocating land for burial ground for Muslims at Jaihindpuram in Madurai, a request that remains to be acceded by the government for nearly 10 years now.
Finally getting his act together, state revenue minister R.B. Udhaya Kumar intervened and drew a distinction between allocation of land for industrial purposes and burial ground. “Land can be allotted for industries, wherever it is available, but it is not possible to do the same for a burial ground,” the minister clarified, expressing his dissatisfaction to the MLA drawing a comparison between land allocation for industries and a burial ground. Not content with the minister’s reply, CPM legislature party leader A. Soundararajan intervened and clarified that his party MLA had only questioned the difficulty in allotting land for burial ground and they (CPM) had no qualms about the government accommodating industries.
An unrelenting Udhaya Kumar further added that only revenue land earmarked for burial ground could be allotted for that purpose. Later, MMK leader M.H. Jawahirullah also joined the issue with the comrades and persuaded the government to accede the Muslims of Jaihindpuram who have been fighting for a decent burial ground for 10 long years.
