Chennai: The Hindu Munnani, which has been playing a crucial role in organising the Ganesh Chathurthi celebrations across the state, has planned to install the idols of various sizes and hues of the Lord at over 50,000 places throughout Tamil Nadu and also hold the Visarjan rallies at about 250 places.
The organisation, which has switched to making of eco-friendly idols, using tapioca powder and water colours, will make eco-friendly idols this time too ranging from 3 feet to 10 feet in height.
About 33 years ago, the Hindu Munnani installed a three-feet idol of Lord Ganesh at Triplicane, here, for public worship and organised immersion function in a modest way. This become a public spectacle and gradually saw huge crowds in attendance for the puja and prayers. The Hindu Munnani, which gets the credit for transforming the Chathurthi celebrations into a popular event in the state.
“Despite the paucity of time we have decided to hold the event focusing on the issues: communal harmony, children and women’s day,” says K. Bakthavatsalam state organiser. For instance, Mylapore boasts of five big idols with a 13 feet papier-mache Ganesh on Luz Corner drawing visitors in large numbers.
