Dry borewells in Telangana cause suicides

Wife of a farmer committed suicide after facing depression due to failure of two borewells
Hyderabad: Laxmi, wife of Narasimhulu, a farmer of Medak district committed suicide after facing depression due to failure of two borewells in their field. “We dug two borewells spending Rs 1.5 lakh on our three-acre land. There was no water. My wife went into depression and committed suicide,” the farmer told irrigation minister T. Harish Rao, during an interaction with kin of those who committed suicide in Medak. He promised him a two bedroom house through deputy speaker Padma Devender Reddy since he belonged to her constituency.
As many as six lakh borewells and open wells out of the total 13 lakh across Telangana have reportedly dried up due to monsoon failure, informed TNGOs president Deviprasad. There are 20 lakh odd agricultural power connections, with some open wells having more than one connection.
Due to the erratic monsoon, the average groundwater table has fallen to 12.32 metres compared to 10.46 metres last year, said A. Dhananjaya, deputy director, TS groundwater department. “If the depth of borewell goes above 10 metres, it is considered critical,” he said. Due to depleting water table, the demand for rig owners and borewell mechanics has gone up.
