Thieves rob 4.68 kg silver, 3 kg gold
COIMBATORE: In a daring robbery at gunpoint, a four-member gang wearing helmets robbed three kg of gold and 4.68 kg of silver during their transportation by the staff of a jewel shop, at Bharathi Colony in Peelamedu on Monday evening.
Police said four persons, including the three staff of a popular jewel shop were transporting gold and silver bars to be made into jewels in a van, when the four men intercepted them in two wheelers and committed robbery at knife point.
"The culprits had intercepted the van and assaulted its driver before fleeing away with the gold and silver. The staff couldn't retaliate as the helmet-borne thieves had threatened to kill them by brandishing a gun," police said.
On receiving information the Peelamedu police led by Deputy Commissioner R V Ramya Bharathi rushed to the spot and held enquiries with them. Police suspect the culprits to have a nexus with the staff of the jewellery shop in their execution of the plan.
Police are also enquiring some public, who were witness to the incident. Further investigations are on and special teams of police are on the lookout for the culprits.
