Burglars loot NRI engineer, decamp with Rs 2 lakh, 1.5kg gold

The incident took place in Venkatadri Colony in Malakpet area on Sunday
Hyderabad: Burglars struck at the house of an NRI software professional while the family was asleep and decamped with gold jewellery weighing around 1.5 kg, and Rs 2 lakh and US $5,000 in cash, that were kept in the almirah.
They, however, spared the expensive iPhone and iPad that were kept on a table beside the almirah. The incident took place in Venkatadri Colony in Malakpet area on Sunday night. Mr Syed Shahnawaz of Venkatadri Colony, Malakpet, a software engineer working in California, had come to Hyderabad on September 3 on vacation. His mother, wife and two children live in the city.
On Sunday evening, after visiting some relatives, his wife Ms Shaheen Sultana, took off her jewellery and placed them in the almirah. While his mother Ms Khursheed Begum slept in one room, Mr Shahnawaz along with his wife and kids slept in another room.
As it was warm, they kept the balcony door open. When Ms Sultana woke up around 2.30 am, she found the almirah was open and she raised an alarm.
“Articles in the almirah were scattered and the jewellery and the cash were missing. Due to the sound of the air cooler, we could not hear any noise when the burglary took place” said Mr Shahnawaz.
“They left the empty vanity box and other wrappers on the roof of the neighbouring house. There are CCTV cameras in this area. We are verifying the footages of the neighbouring colonies,” said Malakpet inspector A. Ganga Reddy.
