Tangedco opts for energy saving LED lights in substations

Tangedco will get a 60 per cent energy saving in replacing a 40W fluorescent tube lights with a 16W LED light.
Chennai: As part of its energy conservation initiatives, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation has decided to go for energy efficient LED lighting system in all the new substations to be constructed by it. In the existing 33KV to 400 KV capacity substations, LED lights will replace existing lights whenever they fail.
Tangedco’s CMD gave the approval for LED lighting proposal last week. Substation buildings and offices will have four-foot 16 watts LED tubelights instead of the conventional 40W fluorescent tube lights (FTLs). The usual power guzzling 250W high pressure sodium vapour lamps in the yards of the SS will give way to energy efficient 72 W LEDs.
“The high cost of LEDs when compared to HPSV is to be offset by taking into consideration the advantages of energy saving potential up to 71 per cent, higher optical efficiency, long life of 50,000 hours, eco friendly and overall integrated performance,” the order said.
Due to technological improvements over a period of years, the wattage of the LED bulb keeps reducing for the same light output (Lumens per watt). The officials were instructed to take into consideration this fact at the time of selecting the wattage of LED bulbs.
Recalling the Prime Minister’s statement during the first meeting of his reconstituted council on climate change seeking paradigm shift in global attitudes towards climate change from carbon credit to green credits, Tangedco’s order said that in the context of achieving climate goals switching over to the LEDs has become inevitable. “As the world moves towards LEDs for lighting, adopting the technology would especially help the utility in narrowing the demand supply gap,” it noted.
In fact, the Tangedco had taken up replacement of FTLs with LED tubelights in the chambers of head of the departments, superintendent engineers, cabins of executive assistants and Hall in its headquarters building in Anna Salai.
