Reducing rivers cut Srisailam inflows
The inflows into Srisailam Dam reduced from 63,000 cusecs to 19,000 cusecs
Hyderabad: Due to decrease in inflows from Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers, the inflows into Srisailam Dam reduced from 63,000 cusecs on Sunday morning to 19,000 cusecs by the evening. The level of the Krishna river at Jurala dropped below 318.2 metres on Sunday evening, forcing officials to stop hydel power generation. Officials have decided to build up the level with the available inflows of 25,000 cusecs.
“Water has not been released from upstream Narayanapur Dam in Karnataka, they have stopped power generation and are impounding water to divert to their canals. The water we are getting is only due to local rains,” said Mr T. Khagender, superintending engineer of Jurala project. He said the water level stood at 317.7 metres at Jurala, and power could not be generated at this level.
“We are getting around 25,000 cusecs, we will build up the water level and then generate power so that water will go to Srisailam Dam,” Mr Khagender said. Correspondingly, the inflows at Srisailam reduced significantly, from 63,000 cusecs on Sunday morning to 19,000 cusecs by the evening.
However, the dam now holds 49 TMC ft as against 26.7 TMC ft before the current spell of rains. At the Sunkesula Barrage across the Tungabhadra in Kurnool district, authorities are releasing 12,000 cusecs and another 2,500 cusecs to the KC Canal.
“We cannot retain any water at Sunkesula. We are releasing all the water into the river and the KC Canal, but we are getting reports that rains may occur in the coming days. If that happens, we will get more inflows and the Srisailam Dam will benefit,” said chief engineer of Srisailam (AP), Mr G. Chittibabu.
