Pregnant cow rescued from deep pit at Pammal
It took five hours for a group of animal lovers to lift her from the 6-feet deep drainage pit
Chennai: Laborious efforts by a group of compassionate minds paved way to the rescuing of a 4-year old pregnant cow from a deep pit at Pammal near Pallavaram on Saturday.
It took five hours for a group of animal lovers that was led by the members of People For Cattle in India (PFCI), an NGO that works for the welfare of animals, a group of six localites, five policemen and the members of fire service team from Tambaram to lift her from the 6-feet deep drainage pit.
“We saw the poor animal at around 1 p.m. and tried calling the NGO’s and the fire-service. The cow was tired and major part of her was immersed in the drainage pit the corporation has dug up a month ago,” said T. Shakthivel, a resident of Pammal who alerted the fire-service team and the NGO. According to onlookers in the area, the cow was trapped in the 4X4 feet pit from 7 a.m. as it had come to graze in the area along with other cows.
“The rescue was very challenging as both the legs of the cow were stuck in an iron bar and therefore we needed to use a rope and use cloths to make sure the poor animal was comfortable,” said K. Mathew, fire-service personnel who headed the rescue.
The rescue efforts were over by 6 o clock in the evening after which the veterinary officials who arrived from the animal husbandry department in Tambaram fed the cow with fluids and gave antibiotics.
“It was one of the most challenging efforts as the cow was not at all co-operating initially and we had to use a long thick rope and some clothes to pull her slowly so that it do not cause her any harm. The local public who gathered had put all efforts until the end,” said Dinesh Baba, volunteer of PFCI who was one among the rescuers. However, the cow was handed over to its owner at Pammal after it was rescued.
